FIFA President Gianni Infantino is sending a bold message just months before the World Cup kicks off: Mexico is ready — despite deadly cartel violence rocking host cities.

Speaking to AFP in Barranquilla on Tuesday, Infantino said he felt “very reassured” about the safety and readiness of Mexican venues, calling the tournament “spectacular.” His comments come two days after a violent backlash erupted following the army’s killing of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Guadalajara, one of Mexico’s main host cities, saw chaos as cartel gunmen set up roadblocks across 20 states, torched vehicles, and attacked businesses. At least 74 people were killed during the operation and subsequent clashes. Yet, FIFA remains steadfast.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum echoed Infantino’s confidence, assuring fans that there is “no risk” to their safety and offering full guarantees for those attending. Guadalajara will host four group-stage matches, including a high-profile showdown between Uruguay and Spain, as well as part of the playoff tournament in March that will determine the final World Cup qualifiers.

As the world watched images of chaos from Mexico, Infantino’s message was clear: the countdown to the World Cup is on, and the spectacle will go ahead as planned.
