I paid N2,000 as her bride price, yet my wife refused to cook for me - Husband tells Oyo court

A man, Ayinla, has told the Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, that he paid N2,000 as his ‘talkative’ wife's bride price and she has stopped cooking for him.

His wife, Mosunmola, had brought him to the court, accusing him of living an irresponsible lifestyle.

She alleged that Ayinla consistently neglected his responsibilities at home and showed little concern for her well-being and that of their children.

She further claimed that he led a reckless life, often returning home late at night after she and the children had already gone to bed.

The plaintiff stated that their relationship was fraught with frequent quarrels, leading to several separations.

She explained that she eventually left the marriage when she could no longer endure the strain.

Mosunmola, therefore, urged the court to grant her custody of their children and to compel her husband to take responsibility for their welfare.

In his response, Ayinla agreed to the dissolution of their marriage, alleging that Mosunmola had stopped cooking for him and neglected his welfare.

He also described her as talkative, a trait he found intolerable.

The defendant further claimed that the plaintiff showed him no respect and frequently insulted him.

Mosunmola, in her testimony, said, “My husband and I never got along throughout the time we were together, which led to my decision to leave.“

"He neither paid my bride price nor fulfilled the required traditional marital rites.

"We made no meaningful progress for the eight years our union lasted.  Neither did we possess any property.

"My husband was indifferent to my welfare and that of our children.

"He was often absent and always returned home late at night after everyone had gone to bed.

“I single-handedly took care of our children’s needs and gave in-depth attention to their feeding and schooling.

"All that he knew to do was to beat me. We lived separately on many occasions, but we were always reconciled because I hoped he would change, but his behaviour got worse.

"I pray the court to grant me custody of our children and my husband be responsible for their feeding and education.

Ayinla, responding, said. “My wife is a liar. I paid N2,000 as her bride price.

“My wife lacks morals and has been a poor role model for our children.

"She refused to cook for me and would instead tell me to give the children money to prepare my meals.

"My wife is talkative, and I dislike this about her.

"She sometimes said inappropriate things, which often landed her in trouble.

"Our marriage ended when she moved out of my house.”

The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case for judgment.
