The United legend came under fire after writing on Instagram that Carrick “has something special about him… because United have been [poor] in the last four games,” following their 2–1 defeat to .
Some fans and former players, including , questioned the remark, with Evra joking that he hoped Scholes’ account had been hacked.
But speaking on the The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes moved quickly to clear the air.
“I never meant it as an insult,” Scholes explained. “Michael is one of the nicest people in football and the last person I’d want to offend.”
The former England midfielder revealed he immediately messaged Carrick to explain the comment, adding that the United coach told him he was not upset.
Scholes said his point was simply that United had not been playing particularly well recently — yet Carrick was still delivering results.
Carrick took charge after the dismissal of and enjoyed an impressive start, going seven matches unbeaten and guiding United past big opponents like and .
Despite the recent dip in performances, the club remain third in the league and firmly on course for a return to the Champions League.
