Nigerian football legend has opened up about his memorable but frustrating spell at , admitting he may have arrived at the French giants during one of the most unstable periods in the club’s history.

In a recent PSG documentary, the former Super Eagles midfield maestro reflected on the excitement of wearing the famous jersey, the love he received from fans, and the painful reality of leaving the club without the trophies he dreamed of winning.


A Special Bond with PSG Fans

Okocha said his mission in Paris was simple — bring joy to the club and its supporters.

“I always tried to give everything for the team. The fans appreciated that, and it created a special connection between us. When supporters show you love, you feel a responsibility to give even more,” he said.

The Nigerian star quickly became a fan favourite after joining the club, dazzling supporters with his creativity and flair just months after impressing at the with the Super Eagles.

A Debut That Announced His Arrival

Okocha recalled the nerves and excitement of his first appearance for PSG, saying he was determined to prove himself immediately.

“When you join a big club, expectations are high. I was eager to show that I belonged. That debut was special because I wanted to make an instant impact and give fans something memorable.”

His spectacular style and confidence quickly made him one of the most exciting players in the French league.

Wearing the Captain’s Armband

Just a year after joining the club, Okocha was handed the captain’s armband — a moment he described as one of the proudest of his career.

“Every player wants to win trophies when they join a club. Unfortunately, we didn’t achieve as much as we hoped. That remains my biggest regret.”

“Too Much Instability”

According to the former playmaker, constant managerial changes made it difficult for the team to build consistency.

“In four years, I played under five different managers. I had never experienced that anywhere else. There were also changes in the club’s leadership. It was a very unstable period, and it affected the team.”

Mentoring a Young Ronaldinho

During his time in Paris, Okocha also shared the dressing room with Brazilian superstar , who later became one of the greatest players in football history.

Okocha said he immediately recognised the youngster’s extraordinary talent.

“From the moment I saw him, I knew he had something special. He had that natural ability and joy for football.”

The Nigerian legend also took on a mentoring role, helping Ronaldinho adjust to life in Europe.

“I knew how difficult it could be for a young player moving away from home. I tried to guide him and encourage him. Seeing how his career developed later made me very happy.”


A Chapter He Will Never Forget

Despite the challenges, Okocha says his time at PSG remains one of the most meaningful periods of his career.

“Playing for this club was special. The fans, the city, and the memories will always stay with me. Even today, whenever I return, I still feel that connection.”
