Tensions surrounding Nigeria’s controversial World Cup qualifying exit have taken a new turn after football’s global governing body, , sanctioned both the (NFF) and the following disciplinary incidents during their dramatic playoff encounter.

The clash between the and the on 16 November 2025 has remained a major talking point since it ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the .

According to FIFA’s disciplinary report, Nigeria was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after fans were found guilty of throwing objects during the heated encounter — an offence that violates match security rules under FIFA’s disciplinary code.

DR Congo, however, received a much heavier punishment, with FIFA imposing a 5,000 Swiss franc fine after supporters were caught using laser pointers and electronic devices during the game.

Despite the sanctions, the fallout from the match goes far beyond fan misconduct.

Nigeria’s World Cup dream was crushed when the Super Eagles lost to DR Congo in a dramatic penalty shootout during the final round of the African qualifying playoffs. But the story did not end on the pitch.

The NFF has since filed a formal complaint to FIFA questioning the eligibility of several DR Congo players, arguing that the country’s domestic laws do not recognise dual citizenship for adults — raising concerns about players holding European passports while representing the Leopards.

NFF General Secretary said the federation fears FIFA may have been misled during the eligibility clearance process.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the , , urged Nigerians not to jump to conclusions despite DR Congo being listed among teams preparing for the intercontinental playoffs.

According to him, FIFA has not yet delivered a final verdict on Nigeria’s petition.

“We are very hopeful that Nigeria will win the eligibility case and the Super Eagles will still get the chance to fight for a place at the World Cup,” Dikko said.

For now, DR Congo remains among the nations preparing for the decisive playoff tournament as the race for the final places at the 2026 World Cup intensifies — while Nigeria waits anxiously for the final verdict.
