John Terry has fired back at comparisons between himself and Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk, insisting that any debate about who was the better Premier League defender must be grounded in accurate statistics.
In a video posted on social media, the former Chelsea captain addressed comments made by Jamie O’Hara and Jermaine Pennant on TalkSport, where the pair discussed who ranks higher among Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidić, and Van Dijk.
Pennant had chosen van Dijk over Terry in the debate, saying “If you said you want John Terry or Virgil van Dijk, I’m having Virgil van Dijk.”
In his response, Terry said, “Guys, this is a debate that everyone’s entitled to their opinion to, but Pens (Pennant), when you’re on the radio and you’re giving your opinion, you have to get the stats right.”
Terry highlighted his own record: “There’s only one person that’s got the most goals as a defender in Premier League history, and that’s me. I also have the most clean sheets in Premier League history. And also if you’re comparing myself and Virgil then I have more trophies than him as well.”
He pointed to his remarkable 2014–15 season under José Mourinho: “At the age of 34, 2014–15, I played every single minute of every game for Chelsea winning the league.”
The 45-year-old, who won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, and the Champions League during his 19-year Chelsea career, said he welcomed the conversation but wanted it to reflect the facts.
“I love the debate. I love being amongst it. I’m really proud of what I’ve done in the Premier League, but this is clearly over to you guys to settle the debate,” he added. “I’m just happy to be in and amongst it.”
The former England captain holds the all-time Premier League record for clean sheets (228) and goals scored by a defender (41). Van Dijk, currently 34, has 13 Premier League goals and 104 clean sheets to date.
