Senegal has fired back at Morocco after 18 Senegalese supporters were sentenced to prison over a pitch invasion at the AFCON final in Rabat.
The fans, arrested after Senegal’s dramatic 1–0 victory, were convicted of clashing with security forces and damaging property. A Moroccan court handed them jail terms of three months to one year, plus fines of up to $545.
Reacting sharply, Prime Minister told parliament the punishment “goes beyond football” and risks hurting relations between two nations that call each other friends.
“This should never have reached this point,” Sonko said, adding that Senegal has done everything possible to secure their release and may activate a bilateral agreement to transfer the prisoners home.
What began as a historic AFCON triumph has now turned into a diplomatic storm — and Dakar is demanding answers.
